The trip I will be making to the United Kingdom over the coming days will be an opportunity to network and fundraise on behalf of Edwardes College. The centerpiece is a visit to Liverpool Hope University, which for about 15 years has had a relationship with Edwardes through which Edwardians have studied for advanced degrees there. I will meet with the Vice Chancellor and others involved in the university's international links – all arranged by Bishop Ian Stuart, Pro Vice Chancellor Emeritus.
On Saturday, 8 October, there will be a gathering of Edwardians at Liverpool Hope at 2:30 p.m., to which all Edwardes alumni and former faculty are invited (see related news article in Latest News). I am very grateful to former Principal Huw Thomas, Edwardes Prof. Jehangir Muhammad and barrister Shahid Iqubal in London, and to Prof. Naveed Ali and Deputy Admin Officer Shah Mehmood at Edwardes for their work in contacting alumni and encouraging them to attend.
A promotional brochure has been prepared for distribution in the UK and elsewhere, copies of which are now posted on the College bulletin boards. The hiring of an Institutional Advancement Officer in the near future (see job posting on the College website), will further energize such efforts, for that officer will have responsibility for fundraising, alumni networking in Pakistan and beyond, promotions, publicity and publications.
Other points on the UK itinerary include Oxford, where I will visit the Church Mission Society, which founded Edwardes in 1900; and Cambridge, where I will visit with the staff of the Cambridge Interfaith Programme, headed by Dr. David Ford, Regius Professor of Divinity in the University. Other universities with which preliminary contacts were made at the May 2011 triennial conference of the Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion may also be visited. On Sunday, 9 October, I will preach at Liverpool Parish Church. Plans have also been made to visit with several other former principals of Edwardes. My wife Jane will join me in England and we will return to Peshawar together.
I will continue to be in touch with the Management Team and others during this absence. In charge on campus will be Vice Principal Prof. Naseem Haider, who may be contacted about all urgent matters.
