“We are people of different countries, faiths and races living in harmony and friendship. We work together and try to learn the secret of fellowship and peace. We hope our lives may be more useful and this sprit of helpfulness will enrich the province in which we live to the greater glory of God"

Faculty Mentor Programme is inaugurated for new instructors PDF Print E-mail

Fifteen new Edwardes faculty members spent time with their newly appointed mentors on the pleasant afternoon of Thursday, 20 October 2011, on the Bungalow Lawn as the Faculty Mentor Programme was inaugurated to integrate new faculty into the College.

After an introduction to the programme by Principal Titus Presler, the new faculty met with their mentors in pre-arranged pairs of chairs around the lawn to get acquainted and discuss challenges and opportunities of their new work at Edwardes.  Tea and refreshments were served to the pairs as they met for close to an hour.

The purpose of the programme is to provide groundwork for a new faculty member to understand the institution and immediately have contact with an experienced and respected faculty member who becomes a friend in an informal relationship, according to a description of the programme circulated to all faculty.

“Becoming part of a new community is not always easy, and new faculty members may feel isolated and uneasy at the beginning,” said Dr. Presler.  “The mentor programme aims to help in the incorporation of the new faculty member.”

New faculty participating in the programme are: Zubair Shah and Bismina Siraj (Urdu), Silas Akhtar (Physics), Yasir Hussain and Myra Edwin (English); Saiqa Nader, M. Shahid Iqbal and F. M. Zafar Kaifi (Chemistry); Nadia Bashir (Pakistan Studies), Noor Jamal (Political Science), Shumaila Ehtisham (Statistics), Samin Khan (Philosophy), Julia Pervaiz (Psychology), Mehboob Alam (Media Studies), and Amjad Amin.

Experienced faculty serving as mentors are: Attaullah Jan, Shakil Ahmad and Nasira Manzur (Physics), Muhammad Jamal and Taj Mashih (Urdu), Shah Jehan (Mathematics), Shujat Ali Khan (Law); Alwin Edwin, Gulzar Jalal and Nasir Iqbal (English); M. Naveed Ali (Computer Science), Sabir Hussain and Yar Muhammad (Islamiyat), Zahoor Khan (International Relations), and Rubna Zafar (Chemistry).  Mentors are assigned to work with faculty who not in their own departments.

The mentor becomes a friend and colleague and introduces the mentee to the institution, to its culture and sense of community.  The mentor assists the new faculty member in learning how to teach in the institution.Curriculum planning, lesson planning, use of technology in the classroom, relationships with students, testing and evaluation of the work of students – in all these areas the mentor can help the new faculty member.

The mentor is in not a supervisor of the mentee, but an additional personal resource.
The mentor is not expected– and indeed is requested not – to report to the administration about the mentee.  The relationship is intended to be confidential.

The New Faculty Mentor Programme at Edwardes College is modeled on the practice of Colorado College, a highly regarded liberal arts college in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA.  Longtime Education Professor Marianna McJimsey, now retired, shared material from that programme that was incorporated into the initiative at Edwardes.
