Brainstorming around the question, “What suggestions do you have for enhancing Edwardes College,” was the highlight of the plenary Faculty Meeting held in Canterbury Hall on Wednesday, 19 October 2011.
Many hands went up from the assembled 80 or so faculty members, and suggestions in quick succession were entered on white boards for later recording, collating, discussion and prioritizing. The approximately 40 suggestions that were made covered a wide range of categories from student and faculty support to information technology, physical improvements and big-ticket items that could be folded into the major fundraising effort the College plans to undertake. Suggested student services included expanded Library hours, a Career Counseling Centre, and a complaint box. Suggestions for faculty support included more social gatherings, annual faculty awards, and strengthened ties with other institutions. Information technology suggestions that would benefit the entire College community included e-addresses for all, an integrated student information system, and participation in the web resources available through the Higher Education Commission. Suggestions for physical improvements ranged from better noise control in the Science Block and more efficient water coolers to more buses and a new classrooms-and-office block. The Management Team is examining the full list, assigning priorities and exploring feasibility of all suggestions prior to developing implementation plans in consultation with the faculty. An update on the suggestions has been posted to the faculty. In other business on 19 October, Principal Titus Presler reviewed the New Faculty Mentor Programme, which was about to be implemented (see related news story), and the proposed shift from a seniority-based to a merit-based faculty promotion system. Regarding the latter, it was agreed that faculty members would continue to discuss it, as would the Edwardes College Teachers Welfare Association (ECTWA). Vice Principal Naseem Haider announced that the Tutorial System needed renewal and invited suggestions from faculty about how the system, which has served the College well for over ten years, can be strengthened. The Principal reported on a trip to the UK that featured strengthened relations with Liverpool Hope University, two alumni gatherings that catalyzed enthusiasm for the College, visits with five former principals, and visits to the Cambridge Interfaith Programme in Cambridge and the Church Mission Society in Oxford. Announcements included the following: – Muhammad Naeem, Asst. Prof. of Urdu, was Acting 1st-Year Head. – Interviews were planned for advertised administrative posts. – Amjad Amin was teaching A-Level Economics. – 10 new benches were about to be installed around the campus. – College website had been refreshed and was open to faculty contributions.
