Prof. Naseem Haider retires as First Vice Principal, will continue teaching Biology PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 January 2012 03:31

In a major transition in the leadership of Edwardes College, Prof. Sayed Naseem Haider Kazmi retired as First Vice Principal as of 31 December 2011.  He has served as Vice Principal since 2008.  Prof. Naseem will continue as Professor of Biology in reemployed status.

This shift comes at Prof. Naseem’s own request at the conclusion of his term of appointment as Vice Principal by the Board of Governors, said Principal Dr. Titus Presler.  He is being succeeded in the position of First Vice Principal by Second Vice Principal Prof. Kalim Ullah, with whom he has worked closely.

In the letter to Prof. Naseem marking his retirement, the Principal wrote: “As in your many previous posts at the College, stretching back to 1974, you have faithfully rendered valuable service in your present position.  During the very difficult interim between principals you steered Edwardes through complex and important decisions as Acting Principal.  Your work as Vice Principal has been characterized consistently by grace, efficiency and wisdom in the many issues of academics, personnel and administration that you have faced.  It has been an honor to be your colleague.  The faculty, administration, staff and alumni join me in deep gratitude to you for your outstanding service.”

A graduate of Edwardes, Prof. Naseem holds the MSc degree in Botany from the University of Peshawar.  He rejoined Edwardes in 1974 as a Demonstrator in the Biology Department, and he was appointed Lecturer in Biology in 1976.  In 1996 he was appointed Hostel Warden and later became Senior Warden of the Hostel.  In 1997 he was appointed Assistant Director of Studies and later became Director of Studies.  In 2001 he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, becoming full Professor in 2007.

As Acting Principal during the leadership interim (May 2010 to May 2011), Prof. Naseem stabilized the College following the departure of the previous principal, oversaw the reorganization of the Finance Department, and nurtured relationships with important external constituencies during a difficult time in the history of the College.

Thus Prof. Naseem is concluding 37 years of service to Edwardes College. An appropriate gathering to honor him will be held as early as possible in 2012, Dr. Presler stated.

  • The annual Awards Ceremony of Edwardes College featured a challenging and inspiring speech by Prof. Imtiaz Gilani, Vice Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar. He spoke extemporaneously, not from notes or a text, and from the heart with passion about the needs of Pakistan. I took notes on a piece of paper, so what appears below are excerpts of his talk from my notes. Read and be inspired: When I was Education Minister this province I visited a village school in Mansera, and there the children were, seated on a mud floor doing their best with the scraps of paper that they were given to work with. These are our children, not children of a lesser god. There is a world out there that is much bigger than some of you students here at Edwardes are aware of. When we go about the city in our air-conditioned cars, children come to our windows begging for a few coi
  • The announcement this week of a Rs. 30 crore grant to Edwardes College is a historic milestone in the history of this institution. The amount, equivalent to US$3.125 million, is major for any educational institution on any continent, and it is the largest grant received in the history of Edwardes. Equally significant is the signal that the Provincial Government supports the College?s move toward degree-awarding status.   We are very grateful to Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti for the decision to support Edwardes at this critically important juncture in the College?s history. Strobe lights were dancing on the walls, and many of the numbers evoked roars of approval from the student audience. Read more...

  • Dear Friends, As College closes for the Christmas holiday I greet you with thanksgiving for a successful first half of the 2011-12 session and with good wishes for a restful time during the 11-day break.  Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, who is important to Muslims as a prophet and central to Christians as the messiah, the Christ.  At this year’s seasonal Hostel Dinner, which my wife Jane and I were able to attend via videoconference, it was clear that the Christmas message of a visitation from God and its fruit of generosity, joy and peace are understood across all religious persuasions.  One of the great blessings of Edwardes College is that we are able to celebrate one another’s religious festivals despite a societal environment of polarization and extremism.
